A few questions Orin hears often — about the tradition behind the reading, how the calculations work, and what to expect.
What is Saju?
Saju (사주, 四柱) — literally 'four pillars' — is an East Asian system of astrology that maps your birth year, month, day, and hour into an eight-character chart. Each pillar carries one of five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) and one of twelve zodiac animals. Together they describe your energetic makeup and how it moves through time.
Is this the same as Chinese astrology?
Saju is a Korean tradition of the same lineage. The underlying system — the calendar, the pillars, the ten stems and twelve branches, the five elements — is shared with Chinese BaZi (八字). Orin uses the same calculations that a traditional practitioner would use.
How accurate are Orin's calculations?
Orin uses the lunar-typescript library for solar-term (節氣) boundaries, which is the standard reference for accurate BaZi calculations. Your year and month pillars turn on the solar terms, so they are anchored to the exact astronomical moment of your birth. Your day pillar is a continuous sixty-day count over calendar days, so it follows your local birth date the way a practitioner would read it. The methodology follows well-documented traditional methods for strength (신강/신약), format (격국), useful god (용신), and pillar relations (合沖).
What if I don't know my exact birth time?
You can select 'Unknown' for the hour. Your year, month, and day pillars will still be accurate, and Orin's reading will reflect that reduced precision — most core insights come from the day pillar, which does not require a birth time.
Why does Orin ask about my location automatically?
Orin uses your browser's timezone to anchor the solar terms in your chart. This is silent by default and is more accurate than assuming a single global time. If you were born in a different country than the one you're browsing from, this can shift your month or year pillar when your birth falls within a few hours of a solar-term boundary. Your day pillar is unaffected, since it follows the calendar date you enter. Email us and we'll help correct your reading.
Why do the daily and today readings feel different?
Today's Zodiac is a public, zodiac-based one-liner that reads all twelve signs against the day's energy — it doesn't require your full birth chart. The Daily reading is personalized: it uses your complete birth pillars against today's day pillar to produce a deeper, category-specific reading (Overall, Love, Career, and so on).
Will Orin always be free?
The daily, weekly, and monthly readings, plus the full birth chart, are free. Later, an annual New Year reading is planned as a separate premium report. Everything currently on the site will remain accessible without payment.
Why does my life-cycle timeline start at an odd age like 4 or 7 instead of 0 or 10?
Dae-woon (大運, 'great fortune') cycles don't begin at round ages. Each cycle is ten years long, but the first one starts at a personal threshold set by your birth's distance from the nearest solar term (節氣) — measured in days and converted to years using the traditional 3-days-equals-1-year rule. Your gender and birth-year polarity then decide whether the cycles run forward or backward through the calendar. The upshot: most people's first dae-woon begins between ages 2 and 9, and every subsequent cycle inherits that offset. So 34–43 is normal; 30–39 would actually be unusual.
Is this real, or just entertainment?
Saju is a real body of traditional knowledge with centuries of practice behind it. Orin renders that tradition transparently — but no astrological reading is a factual prediction. Treat it as reflection: notice what resonates, ignore what doesn't. Do not use readings for medical, financial, or legal decisions.
